Diabetes is a condition when the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar and starches into energy. An estimated 7.8% of the United States population has some form of diabetes.

When not properly managed, diabetes can lead to many serious effects, including but not limited to:

  • Heart disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Blindness
  • Nerve damage
  • Impotence
  • Gangrene
  • Amputation

Types of Diabetes

Diabetes stems from the body’s inability to produce insulin. Without insulin the body cannot process and use glucose for energy.

Diabetes begins directly after pregnancy.

Glucose levels are raised, but not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes.

  • Lack of exercise
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Ethnicity
